  • Havering Swimming Gala –

On Tuesday 30th January and Wednesday 31st January the Havering Schools Swimming Gala took place hosted by Abbs Cross. A very successful competition was held on both days with many successes from Abbs Cross swimmers. We had a plethora of helpers ranging from our Yr8 and Yr9 leadership academy students to GCSE students used as timekeepers and runners for the event. Each and every student was a credit to Abbs Cross and the events could not have taken place without their help.

We had some notable successes throughout the competitions and a record number of entries into the final races. From Yr7 Jasmine finished third in her backstroke event, swimming an excellent race as did the girls Yr7 medley relay team and the boys freestyle relay team. From Yr8, James finished second in his backstroke final along with the freestyle relays in both the boys and girls team finishing in third position. Lola in Yr 8 swam an excellent butterfly race, finishing third. Most notable result in Yr9 was Amy who swam a brilliant backstroke race, beating the opposition and finishing first as Havering schools

backstroke Yr9 Champion. Also, from Yr9, Ionela swam a great race in front crawl finishing in third position as did Ethan from Yr11 in his butterfly event. Well done to all competitors for an extremely successful event.

We visited the following places:

  • Creative Writing trip –

On Tuesday 9th January 90 Year 8 students attended a Creative Writing workshop at Tower Bridge. Students were able to participate in activities based around writing creatively. They really enjoyed the experience and the trip into London.

  • Globe Theatre trip –

On the 16th and 19th January Year 7 students made a trip into London to the Globe Theatre. Students really enjoyed the tour of the historic theatre and the walk around the surrounding areas on the Southbank.

  • 'Cry Baby' at New City College Production -

Year 10 GCSE Dance, Drama and Music students ventured to New City College, Havering Sixth Form College to see their BTEC Performing Arts production of 'Cry Baby'.

Students thoroughly enjoyed watching the performance, seeing live musicians, actors and dancers perform with excellence and professionalism, with exciting sets and costumes.

  • National Portrait Gallery trip –

Yr 9 Art students visited the National Portrait Gallery on January 23rd and took part in a ‘Portrait Hunt’ activity and self-led tour of the gallery. Students tracked down contemporary and historic works in different wings of the gallery and completed a written task about the style and meaning of works. Looking at portraits of Queen Elizabeth 1 from 1592 and a Malala Yousafzai portrait work by Shirin Neshan made in 2018 brought different approaches within portraiture into focus, broadening students’ understanding of what’s possible. Students were asked to consider what art elements were used by artists in these and other works and asked to reflect on how they could develop their own use of colour, line, shape etc in their own artwork.
