Joining Us in Year 7
Welcome information for students joining us in September 2026
Welcome to Abbs Cross. We are very much looking forward to meeting you at the events listed below and to working with you in the years to come.
You will soon receive a letter giving more details about the transition process, but in the meantime, please make a note of the following events that we will run to ensure that you make a successful start to your time at Abbs Cross Academy.
Key dates for your diary:
1. Admissions Interviews – Monday 18th – Thursday 21st May
You will be invited into school to fill in an admission form. The time of your appointment will be sent out to you in the coming weeks. The admissions interview allows us to gather vital information and to begin to build a working relationship between school and home. The interview itself will last approximately 10 minutes, but we ask you to arrive 15 minutes early so that you have time to complete the necessary paperwork.
Please bring proof of your child’s ID and address, and a recent passport sized photograph of your child.
2. Induction Day – Friday 26th June
Students are invited to spend the day with us in order to begin to familiarise themselves with the way that secondary schools work. Taster lessons and other activities will run and there will be opportunity for students to begin to get to know other members of their form.
Students should arrive in their current school’s uniform, bring pens and pencils, and should also make sure that they have a packed lunch and a drink.
Students should arrive at 8.45am. The school day will end at 3.00pm.
Please note that for students joining us from schools from which they are the only child (or one of two students) moving up to Abbs Cross, there will be an additional induction morning on Thursday 25th June to ensure that students have the opportunity to meet with others in the same situation and begin to form friendships that will develop in September.
3. Meet the Tutor – Tuesday 7th July
Students and parents/carers will be invited into school to meet their Year 7 tutor.
Mrs Jethwa will give a short speech before students move to their Year 7 tutor room where they will learn more about their school.
You will receive a letter inviting you to attend the Meet the Tutor event at either 4.45pm or 5.15pm.
Dear Parent/Carer,
I am delighted to welcome you to Abbs Cross Academy. I take great pride in the fact that you have entrusted the secondary education of your child to us here at Abbs Cross. The relationship between parents and school is vital in ensuring that your child has the opportunity to explore their talents and is given the chance to achieve their best. Successful transition from Primary to Secondary School is crucial in ensuring that your child gets off to a flying start. As such there are a number of important dates to note in this letter. We will also be either visiting your child’s Primary School or speaking to their teachers by phone.
I will be inviting you to attend an interview between Monday 18th and Thursday 21st May so we can give you more information about the school, fill in our admissions form and give you and your child the opportunity to ask any questions that you might have. The admission form requires us to gather information such as parents’ address and phone numbers, your doctor’s name, address and phone number and the phone numbers for other emergency contacts. It would be very helpful if you could bring this information with you at the time of your interview. We will send you details of the date and time after the Easter holidays.
We will be inviting all students who will be joining us in September to an Induction Day where they will spend the day here at Abbs Cross Academy and take part in various lessons. The date for the Induction Day is Friday 26th June.
Please also note that we will run an additional induction day on Thursday 25th June for students who are joining us as the only child from their current school, or as a pair, to ensure that they are able to form friendships ahead of the main induction day on Friday 26th. We will write to you with more details in due course.
On the evening of Tuesday 7th July you and your child will be invited in to the school to meet your child’s new form tutor and some of the other students who will be in their tutor group. Again, we will write to you with further details of this event in due course.
We look forward to seeing you both soon. If you have any queries in the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact us.
