Abbs Cross has developed a partnership with the construction firm Murphy and the Chartered Institute of Builders
Abbs Cross have now had the official hand over with Murphy, infrastructure specialists and the Chartered Institute of Builders (CIOB, the world’s largest and most influential professional body for construction management and leadership. Murphy and CIOB are sponsoring us as a school to help support the running of the Design Engineer Construct (DEC) qualification.
DEC is an accredited learning programme for secondary-school age students and has been expertly developed to create and inspire the next generation of Built Environment professionals. Through a project-based approach, the course applies pure academic subjects to the latest construction industry practices. The result is young people with real-world practical experience and employability skills.
There are many opportunities for cross curricular learning including explicit opportunities for Maths, English and Science as well as for other aspects of the wider curriculum such as Citizenship and PHSE.
Abbs Cross are currently running DEC in Year 10 with students completing their Level 1 designing and modeling an eco-classroom. As well as this students have been looking into their favourite buildings and having class debates about their opinions.
During the hand over some of our Year 10 DEC students met one of the Managing Directors from Murphy and the Deputy Chief Executive of CIOB and had the opportunity to show them their work. They were really impressed by the maturity of the students and the work they have created.
We look forward to welcoming this partnership into the school on a regular basis to teach students about sections of the course and build up a fantastic working relationship.
