Welcome to Year 9

“Believe in yourself and anything is possible.”

Year 9 at Abbs Cross Academy is an important yet exciting year for our students. They will be making the transition from Key Stage 3 to Key Stage 4 and with this comes some very important decisions. We understand that students will need support throughout the option process to ensure that they make choices which reflect their ability levels and that they are fully prepared for the challenges of Key Stage 4. As the Year 9 Achievement Team Leader, I will be working closely with all Year 9 students to guide them and advise them where possible so that they are able to make these choices with confidence. Myself and Mrs Powell Year 9 Care Team will also discuss the core subjects and requirements with students to ensure that they are fully aware of the options process.

As parents, we understand that you may have questions regarding the options process and the academic progress of your children. Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s tutor, myself or Mrs Powell if you wish to speak to us. There will be a number of events happening this year which relate to Year 9 and the options process and we hope that we will have your support at these events.

Every student in Year 9 is important to us. We insist on the highest standards of work and behaviour at all times. Every student must follow the school Code of Conduct and must be in the right place, at the right time, doing the right thing. Certificates and prizes will be awarded for outstanding work throughout the year. We are keen to recognize good working habits. Equally sanctions are in place when students fail to do the right thing. We are very clear that students must take responsibility for their actions at all times. Students are encouraged to have their say in the life of the school and each tutor group sends representatives to the regular Year 9 student council meetings ensuring that the student voice is heard.

In order to ensure that students are able to work independently, homework will be set on a regular basis and is expected to be completed by students in a well-presented manner and on time. We are always able to support students who need assistance with homework and our library offers a quiet study space, should students need it at school. We would also hope that our students have a quiet environment in order to study and complete their homework at home so that all work is completed to the best of their abilities. Homework must be written in to their homework diary, which we ask parents to check and sign weekly. We wish to continue to build a strong relationship between home and school as this a proven formula in helping students to achieve their best.

We will also support our students with their organisational skills and ask that parents work with us on this too. We expect our students to be well-equipped for every lesson by having their planner, relevant books/kit and pens and pencils with them. They will also require a reading book every day as a huge importance is placed on reading both in lessons and in our Whole School Reading session during Thursday afternoon registration. We believe that this will encourage our students’ love of reading as well as improving their literacy skills.

We hope that our Year 9 students will find this year enriching and inspiring and that it will help them to develop into successful and motivated young adults.

I look forward to working alongside you in order to support and ensure the achievement of your children.
