Welcome to Year 10

“It’s choice not chance that determines your destiny.”

Year 10 at Abbs Cross Academy is an important yet exciting year for our students as they embark on their GCSE courses and fully take on the transition to Key Stage 4. Our students have spent a lot of time and consideration on their option choices and now is the time for them to start these courses and focus their energy and enthusiasm on subjects that inspire and excite them. This will hopefully lead them to be able to make interesting and aspirational career choices later on in their lives.

The start of Year 10 is an exciting one and does promise strong elements of challenge as our students strive to achieve the best they can and be the best that they can. However, we do recognise that this can be a difficult transition and that you as parents may have questions about the courses that your children are undertaking. If this is the case, please do not hesitate to contact me (Mr Rahman) as their ATL and I will be happy to help you.

At Abbs Cross Academy, we believe that communication between school and home is a key factor in the overall happiness and success of our students’ achievements and as such, we will contact you should we need to discuss your child’s progress or behaviour with you. It is important that you feel free to contact myself (Mr Rahman) or Mrs Young (YCT) if you do have any concerns at all and in this way, we hope to continue to build positive relationships between school and home.

In order to ensure that students are able to work independently, homework will be set on a weekly basis and completed by students in a well-presented manner and on time. We would ask that you are vigilant in checking your children’s homework diaries in order to monitor the amount of homework that they are receiving and support them with this at home. We are always able to support students who need assistance with homework and our library offers a quiet study space should students need it at school. We would also hope that our students have a quiet environment in order to study and complete their homework at home so that all work is completed to the best of their abilities.

We will also support our students with their organisational skills and ask that parents work in partnership with us. We do expect our students to be well-equipped for every lesson by having their planner, relevant books/kit and pens and pencils with them and a full list of necessary items can be located in their homework diaries. An appropriate reading book is also a compulsory item of equipment as we believe that literacy is an important part of the school day. Students will be required to read for the first five minutes of every lesson and they will join together in a while school reading programme on Thursday afternoons. We believe that this will not only develop their literacy skills but we hope that it will also harness a love of reading.

We hope that our Year 10 students will find this year inspiring and challenging and we are excited to be embarking on the start of their GCSEs with them.

I look forward to working alongside you in order to support and ensure the achievement of your children.
