English National Ballet: Premier of Giselle and Workshop

‘An electrifying triumph.  Staggeringly beautiful and utterly devastating: you must see this ballet!’ Daily Express *****

‘A masterpiece of 21st century dance.’ Mail On Sunday *****

On Tuesday 19th September, 18 students (part of year 11 GCSE dance and AX Dance Company), were lucky enough to receive the opportunity to see the premier of Giselle, performed by the English National Ballet.

The English National Ballet performed only SIX performances at the Sadler’s Wells Theatre, Islington and Abbs Cross students and staff were honoured to be a part of this.  The English National Ballet performed contemporary ballet, telling the story of Giselle – an iconic love story full of love, betrayal and redemption.  The stunning costumes wowed the audience and the set design, created by Academy Award-winning designer Tim Yip filled the stage.

Callie Sampson, a year 11 GCSE Dance student said ‘We found the ballet very entertaining.  The English National Ballet increased our study skills and helped us understand the content of the choreography and styles.  The dance showed us how to portray love and being summoned by spirits, whilst expressing punishment and choice.  The performance has us hooked from the beginning and I would recommend everyone to go and see it!’

In addition to the premier, Abbs Cross Academy, joined with Bower Park Academy; participating in a workshop led by professional dancers and musicians in the Abbs Cross Academy dance studio.

On Wednesday 3rd October, students participated in a workshop, teaching contemporary and ballet motifs and choreography, taken directly from the Giselle performance.   We were joined by multiple professionals from the dancing industry and year 10 GCSE students from Bower Park with Mrs Freer.

The workshop was exciting, high energy and full of incredible choreographic ideas, approaches and exercises that our GCSE students can use and develop within their GCSE course.

Lauri Fordham-Reed, a member of AX Dance Company said: ‘I have gained so much from this workshop, it’s so different to anything I have done before – it’s been brilliant!’

Thank you to the follow professionals who work alongside/ with the English National Ballet: Michaela Ellis, Katie Cambridge, Georgia Heighway, Alex Paton, Danilo Morooni and Joe Raynor.
