Whole School Literacy Focus:

  • Words of the week
  • Preposterous: (adjective) contrary to reason or common sense; utterly absurd or ridiculous.

Claiming that Southend United will win the FA Cup is a preposterous suggestion.

  • Cajole: (verb) to persuade (someone) to do something by sustained coaxing or flattery.

Her best writing had to be cajoled out of her by her teachers.

  • Nadir:  (noun) the lowest point of something; the opposite of zenith.

James knew he had reached his nadir as a writer when he failed to sell a single copy of his latest book.

  • Sprightly: (adjective) full of energy; lively (especially of an old person)

My grandmother charged up the escalator at a sprightly pace.

  • Atone: (verb) to make amends or reparation for wrongdoing

I felt such guilt for my actions that I felt the need to atone for my crimes.

  • Resilience: the capacity to recover from setbacks or difficult situations

He demonstrated enormous resilience in overcoming the difficulties that might have prevented him achieving his ambition.

  • Grammar GuidanceIts versus It’s

This one tends to confuse even the best of writers. “Its” is possessive that shows ownership and “it’s” is a contraction of “it is” or “it has”.
